Upcoming Closure:The Library will be closed Sunday, April 20, 2025.

You can now find a community fridge at the Urbandale Public Library in the Justin Martin Community Room. Together with the City of Urbandale and Food GRID, this initiative aims to eliminate food insecurity and reduce food waste.

Our Two Main Goals

  • Reduce food waste. By sharing surplus food, we help keep fresh, nutritious items out of landfills and put to good use in Urbandale.
  • Eliminate Food Insecurity. The community fridge is a free resource to ensure everyone has access to fresh, nutritious food.

Operating Hours

The community refrigerator will be accessible during normal library operating hours. When the Urbandale Public Library is closed, the refrigerator will not be accessible. The availability of food and other items may vary daily based on donations received.

Disclaimer: The contents of this fridge may contain allergens, including but not limited to milk, nuts, eggs, gluten, and soy. Individuals with food allergies or sensitivities should exercise caution and consume items at their own risk.

The Best Items for the Fridge Are:

  • Fruits, vegetables, ready-to-eat meals, proteins, dairy, and eggs.
  • Bread, baked goods, canned food, and pantry dry goods may be placed on the shelving next to the fridge.
  • If you’re donating something homemade, from a restaurant or event, please make sure it’s packaged, dated, and labeled correctly to ensure the safety of anyone with an allergy.
  • Fresh, packaged meat, poultry or fish should be placed in the freezer.
